Pima Theater Presents a Fresh Take on a Classic Tale with Frankenstein’s Monster, Oct. 21 - Nov. 1

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College Theater Arts presents “Frankenstein's Monster,” an original adaptation written and directed by Maryann Green. Inspired by Mary Shelley's groundbreaking novel, this reimagining shifts the focus to the Creature's journey while giving greater voice and significance to the women whose lives are shaped by Victor Frankenstein's actions.

As the Creature searches for connection, understanding and acceptance in a world that fears him, audiences are invited to consider what it truly means to be human. The production explores themes of belonging, isolation and the consequences of judging others based on fear and appearance.

Green's adaptation expands the roles of the novel's female characters, bringing new depth to Elizabeth, Justine and others who are often overlooked in traditional retellings. Their perspectives help illuminate the far-reaching consequences of Victor Frankenstein's pursuit of creating life.

“For as much of a feminist as Mary Shelley was, the main female characters are pretty underdeveloped in the novel.” Green said, “I have tried in some small way to remedy that.”

This retelling invites audiences to reflect on modern questions surrounding technology and artificial intelligence. Like Victor Frankenstein, society continues to create powerful new tools that can shape our future in ways we do not fully understand.

“The conversations we're having right now about our growing reliance on AI and the responsibilities of those who are in control of its creation and growth are especially relevant to the responsibility that Victor continuously ignores throughout the play, to the detriment of all those he loves,” Green said.

The story raises enduring questions about innovation, responsibility and our obligations to the things we create. More than two centuries after the novel's publication, Shelley's exploration of humanity, ethics and scientific ambition remains strikingly relevant.
