An Original Student-written Adaptation Brings Wonderland to High School, Nov. 20-23

Tucson, AZ — Pima Community College Theater proudly presents “Alice and the Curious Class: A Lesson in Wonder,” an original adaptation inspired by Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” The production is written by Pima Theater students Ximena Altamirano, Cayden Clark, Holly H. Fanlon, Gracie Garcia and Kira Lynn Tselentis and edited by Maryann Green, and has lyrics by Paolo Marquez-Robinson, music by Dan Tavel. This inventive new production is directed by Kaché Mumford, with assistant director Gracie Garcia, and reimagines Carroll’s timeless story through the eyes of a modern-day middle and high school student.

Alice is about to start high school, and the pressure is on to choose the right path. The guidance counselor talks in riddles, a wacky kid in a giant hat rules the lunchroom, and Principal Corazon keeps shouting, “Off with their heads!” With a little help from her older sister Chelsie, Alice might just figure out how to survive high school, and even make some friends along the way.

“Alice’s story has always been about growing up and figuring out who you are in a confusing world,” said director Mumford. “In this version, the students have beautifully connected that theme to the chaos of high school, a place where everyone is trying to find themselves while navigating rules that don’t always make sense. It’s whimsical, heartfelt, and entirely their own.”

Brimming with humor, music and imagination, “Alice and the Curious Class” blends Carroll’s classic characters with the energy and perspective of today’s students. The production highlights the collaboration between student writers, composers and designers, celebrating the creative spirit that drives Pima’s Theater program.

“This project is special because it’s truly student-driven,” said Mumford. “From the writing to the music to the performances, their voices shape every scene. It’s a reminder that the curiosity and wonder at the heart of Alice still speak powerfully to new generations. This play gives voice and power to the outsiders, the people who march to the beat of their own drum, and shows that there’s room for everyone.”
