Pima Community College to Honor Student Heroes with Inaugural Pima Heroes Award Ceremony

TUCSON, AZ -- Pima Community College will shine a spotlight on 10 students who have demonstrated outstanding service to the Tucson community. Each honoree will receive a $1,000 award, and one standout student — the “Hero of Heroes” — will be recognized with an additional $5,000 prize at the inaugural Pima Heroes Award Ceremony, taking place Friday, October 10, at PCC’s West Campus.

“Being recognized for my community service feels humbling because I don’t do it for attention,” said PCC Heroes Award honoree who volunteers at the St. Vincent de Paul society,” Jade Heath. “I do it because I care about my community and the people in it. I’m motivated to serve because I know what it’s like to struggle, and I want to be the person I once needed for others.”

To be eligible, students had to be enrolled in both the spring and fall 2025 semesters, taking at least six credit hours each term. Their service to the community had to be unpaid, and applicants were required to submit a letter of reference from the organization they served. Dozens of students applied, with the final 10 selected by the Pima Community College Governing Board.

"We are so proud of these PCC students and their leadership in service," said PCC Chancellor, Dr. Jeffrey P. Nasse. The Pima Heroes Award celebrates their impact as everyday heroes who are helping people and embody the strength of our community."

The award was established by Tucson philanthropists Carmen Bermudez and her husband, Tom Feeney, to encourage and recognize PCC students who give back through service. Bermudez, having established a similar award at the University of Arizona in 2023, was eager to extend the recognition to PCC students.

“Recognizing students for their selfless acts is our way of saying thank you while validating their contributions to the community,” said Bermudez. “By celebrating them, we hope to inspire their peers.”
