Pima Graduate Keynote Speaker at 14th Annual Arizona Undergraduate Research Symposium

Aleesha Clevenger will present on ‘Defying Expectations: Viking Woman BJ 581’s Success in Penetrating 4-in-1 Chainmail’

Tucson, AZ – Aleesha Clevenger, a 2018 Pima graduate, is the keynote speaker at the 14th annual Pima Community College Undergraduate Research Symposium on Saturday at West Campus.

Clevenger, an archaeology student at the University of Arizona, will present “Defying Expectations: Viking Woman BJ581’s Success in Penetrating 4-in-1 Chainmail.” She completed most of the research for this project during an independent study at Pima, said Helen L. O’Brien, Pima Archaeology Centre Program Coordinator and GIS Discipline Coordinator. 

This is the only forum in Arizona for all undergraduate students. Submissions are welcome from students of any community college or university in the state wanting to present their original research.

“This is not the only forum for undergraduate students, but it is the only forum open to all undergraduate students," said O’Brien, one of the symposium organizers. "I am continually impressed with the quality of the research.”

Presentations include five oral presentations and at least 12 posters of original research.

O’Brien said that, in April, Clevenger also presented a poster on the results of another research project at the Society for American Archaeology 88th Annual Meeting.

Clevenger graduated from Pima with associate degrees in accounting and in general studies. At the 2022 symposium, she and Jon Boyd presented their research “Birka Viking BJ581-An Elite Woman Warrior."
