Xicana Indigenous Artivist at Pima, April 28

Join us at Pima’s Downtown Campus for the Ethnic, Gender, Transborder Studies/Sociology Summit

Tucson, AZ – The 7th Annual Ethnic, Gender, Transborder Studies and Sociology Summit will feature keynote speaker Felicia 'Fe' Montes, M.A., M.F.A., and will focus on the topic of “community making.” Montes is a Xicana Indigenous holistic artivist, femcee, designer, poet, professor and practitioner of the healing arts from East Los Angeles.

Montes is the co-founder and coordinator of Mujeres de Maiz, In Lak Ech, Botanica del Barrio and El MERCADO y Mas. Having organized, performed at and presented at hundreds of campuses and community spaces, she is known throughout the Southwest as an established Xicana cultural worker of a new generation.

“Our day will be filled with exciting presentations related to ‘community making,’” said Elizabeth Gaxiola, Pima faculty and discipline coordinator for Mexican American Studies. “We often hear of the organizations that work for our community, but we do not often hear of the individuals that are working in the field, the ones who are involved in the day-to-day challenges and efforts. Today, our time will be learning from community members who are ‘making’ in our community. It is through their efforts that they have addressed principles of social justice which include access to resources, equity, participation, diversity and human rights.”

The event is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. April 28 at Downtown Campus in the Amethyst Room. It is free and open to the public. RSVP here.
