New pathway opens to WNMU bachelor’s degrees

December 4, 2019

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College will sign an agreement with Western New Mexico University (WNMU) Dec. 6 that will allow students to apply dozens of credits earned at Pima toward a bachelor’s degree at WNMU.

  • What: Transfer articulation agreement signing
  • When: Dec. 6, 10:30 a.m.
  • Where: Pima West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Road, Center for the Arts Recital Hall

Each year, more than 1,000 Pima students receive an Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) certificate after completing a 35-credit program comprising foundational courses, including those in writing, mathematics, and the physical and social sciences. Those 35 credits can be applied toward bachelor’s degree coursework at Arizona’s three state universities. In May 2019, 1,461 Pima students received AGECs.

In signing the new agreement, WNMU will allow AGEC credits earned at Pima to be applied toward bachelor’s degrees at WNMU. In addition, credits received by Pima students in the course of earning specific associate’s degrees, such as Fine Arts or Business, may be applied toward bachelor’s degrees at WNMU, depending on the student’s major and specific WNMU program requirements.

The new pact complements a previous agreement between Pima and WNMU, in which WNMU would charge Pima students in-state tuition rates that are substantially lower than out-of-state tuition.

“This new partnership with Western New Mexico University provides our students with another opportunity to efficiently earn a high-quality bachelor’s degree at low cost,” Pima Provost Dr. Dolores Durán-Cerda said.

Attending the ceremony from Western New Mexico University, located in Silver City, N.M., will be WNMU President Dr. Joseph Shepard and Provost Dr. William Crocker. Pima Chancellor Lee D. Lambert also will attend.
