PCC Wins Regional Equity Award

Qualifies for Consideration for National Honor

August 12, 2019

Tucson, AZ -- Pima Community College has won the Association of Community College Trustees’ (ACCT) 2019 Pacific Regional Equity Award for furthering diversity, equity and inclusion among students and the community.

As one of five regional winners, Pima is eligible for ACCT’s national equity award, the Charles Kennedy Equity Award, which will be announced on October 18 in San Francisco.

In choosing the regional equity award winners, ACCT considered:

  • institutional accomplishments to increase access and success among underserved or underrepresented student populations,
  • increases in the number of the institution’s employees, especially in positions of leadership, who are from underserved or underrepresented populations, and
  • institutional successes in community engagement regarding underserved or underrepresented populations.

In recognizing Pima, the ACCT cited the College’s support of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students, including creation of the Immigrant and Refugee Student Resource Center, which provides information about legal rights, financial support and other resources to students, College employees and community members.

ACCT also cited Pima’s collaboration with Chicanos Por La Causa, the state’s public universities and Maricopa Community Colleges to raise scholarship funds for DACA students. Pima’s Transition to Jobs partnership with Arizona@Work, Refugee Education Program and Ethnic, Gender and Transborder Studies Department also were cited.

“I am proud to be part of a College that puts equity at the heart of its work,” Governing Board Chair Demion Clinco said. “The award validates our efforts to enable all students, wherever they come from, to succeed.”

“Everyone at Pima can take pride in this honor, as it demonstrates our unwavering College-wide commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion,” Chancellor Lee D. Lambert said in a message to the College community that mentioned the Governing Board, Provost’s Office and Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
