Gov. Ducey to visit PCC Feb. 15

February 12, 2019

Governor will discuss proposed $20M expansion of
Pima’s Aviation Technology Center

Tucson, AZ  -- Gov. Doug Ducey will visit Pima Community College’s Aviation Technology Center on Feb. 15 to detail his proposed $20 million expansion of the facility.

The expansion will create more graduates to fill high-quality jobs while enhancing the state’s goals of attracting business in the aviation, aerospace and defense sectors.

  • When: Friday, Feb. 15, 2019, 10:45-11:30 a.m.
  • Where: Aviation Technology Center, 7211 S. Park Ave.
  • Details: Seating is limited. Register for the event.

“We are honored by Gov. Ducey’s visit,” Chancellor Lee D. Lambert said. “His farsighted proposal addresses a workforce development challenge in a way that benefits Pima County and the state by increasing the number of work-ready professionals in a key sector of the economy.”

It is estimated that 679,000 new airline maintenance technicians will be needed over the next 20 years in North America. Pima County has the largest concentration of aviation occupations in the state, 179 percent above the U.S. average.

If approved by the Arizona Legislature, Gov. Ducey’s proposal would double the annual number of students Pima can train, from about 125 to 250. According to Sun Corridor Inc., the 2019-2023 overall economic benefit to the state is projected to exceed $225 million from increases in jobs, payroll, output and tax revenues.

Pima’s Aviation Technology program is one of a handful of schools in the U.S. offering sought-after Aircraft Structural Repair, as well as aircraft mechanics training for commercial jet transport and avionics technician training. Pima’s students receive 2,000 hours of training, take more than 100 exams and are expected to complete 300 hands-on projects.
