General Education Requirements

General Education helps students to gain an understanding of themselves; history and culture; and the principles and impact of mathematics, science, technology, and effective communication.

Which general education courses are required?

General education requirements vary by degree and certificate. The overall requirements are listed below for certificates, direct employment degrees and transfer degrees (AGEC).

Specific degrees may require specific courses that already fulfill some or all of these requirements. 

Always use your specific degree or certificate web page (see Degrees & Certificates) to learn which courses and how many credits are needed for your program.

  • CTE General Education Requirements CTE (Career and Technical Education) general education requirements apply to the following degrees:
    • Associate of Applied Science degrees
    • Associate of General Studies degree 

  • AGEC Transfer General Education Requirements 
    Transfer program general education requirements apply to the following certificates & degrees:
    • AGEC-A, AGEC-B and AGEC-S certificates
    • Associate of Arts degree
    • Associate of Business Administration degree
    • Associate of Fine Arts degree
    • Associate of Science degree
    • Honors certificate

General Education Learning Outcomes

General Education Learning Outcomes (GELOs) are listed below. Some of these outcomes are integrated into some PCC certificates. All GELOs are integrated into AAA, AAS and AGS degree programs. These outcomes supplement and/or complement program learning outcomes listed under specific degrees and certificates.

  1. Effectively communicate information, ideas and/or arguments appropriate to the audience and purpose.
  2. Identify and investigate problems and develop creative, practical, and ethical solutions by evaluating information and using appropriate methods of reasoning.
  3. Use mathematical and scientific processes, procedures, data, or evidence to solve problems.
  4. Locate, evaluate, and use information from diverse sources in an effective and ethical manner.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of the values and influence of diverse cultural, historical, and global perspectives.
