Endorsements and Deficiencies

Take requisite courses to earn endorsements, additional certificates, or remove deficiencies. Our courses are online and designed for the working professional.

PreK-12 Endorsements

Endorsements are attachments to teaching certificates and indicate areas of specialization. At Pima Community College, you can add the following endorsements to your certificate

The Structured English Immersion (SEI), PreK-12 Endorsement authorizes the holder to teach one or more English language learners in the area of the educator's prerequisite certificate.

Prerequisite Certificate: This endorsement is available to applicants with a valid Arizona Elementary, Secondary, Special Education, Career and Technical Education, Early Childhood, Arts Education Prek-12, PreK-12 Physical Education, Subject Matter Expert, Specialized Secondary STEM, Supervisor, Principal, or Superintendent Certificate.

Information: EDC 287 (Elementary Teachers) and EDC 288 (Secondary Teachers) each provide three semester hours of content related to the teaching of the English Language Learner Proficiency Standards; instruction in SEI strategies, teaching with the ELL Proficiency Standards, and monitoring ELL student academic progress using a variety of assessment tools.

The Moderate/Severe Disabilities, PreK-12 endorsement authorizes the holder to teach students with moderate/severe disabilities in a PreK-12 special education classroom.

Prerequisite Certificate: This endorsement is available to applicants with a valid Arizona Standard Professional Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle Grades, Secondary, Hearing Impaired, Visually Impaired, Early Childhood Special Education, or Mild/Moderate Disabilities Certificate.

Teaching Experience: Three years of full-time teaching experience in PreK-Grade 12.

Special Education Coursework:

  • 15 hours of special education coursework
    • ESE 252, ESE 254, ESE 255, ESE 270, ESE 273
  • 45 hour practicum
    • ESE 280

Arizona requires all educators teaching reading in grades K-5 to earn the K-5 Literacy Endorsement. Pima Community College is an approved provider.

This post-degree program applies to students who already have a valid Arizona Standard Professional Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle Grades, Secondary, Hearing Impaired, Visually Impaired, Early Childhood Special Education, or Moderate/Severe Disabilities certificate.

Allowable Deficiencies

The AZ Department of Education will issue to approved applicants, an Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education certificate with the following deficiencies. Allowable deficiencies must be corrected by the due date identified on your certificate(s).

The AZ Dept of Education requires all teachers seeking a Standard Professional Elementary Certificate and all Special Education Certificates to complete at least three (3) semester hours or 45 clock hours of approved training in research-based science of reading instruction, including systematic phonics. EDC 272 satisfies this requirement.

The AZ Dept of Education requires Elementary, Secondary, and all Special Education teachers to complete a college/university course or Board-approved training in research-based instructional strategies for delivering differentiated reading instruction, assessment, intervention, and remediation to support readers of varying ages and ability levels, including students with dyslexia.

EDC 257 satisfies this requirement for Secondary candidates and ESE 272 satisfies this requirement for Elementary and all Special Education candidates.

The AZ Dept of Education requires teachers of all grades to complete a college/university course or Board-approved training in professional responsibility and ethical conduct.  EDC 257 satisfies this requirement.

The AZ Dept of Education requires teachers of all grades to either pass the exam: "Constitutions of the United States and Arizona" (AZ033) OR complete appropriate course(s) through an accredited institution. POS 210- National and State Constitutions meets the requirements for both the AZ and the U.S. Constitution (3 credits).
