February 1, 2018

College recognized for expanding connections with Mexico

Tucson, AZ  -- Pima Community College is one eight colleges and universities nationwide selected by the Institute of International Education (IIE) to receive an IIE Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education, which honors the most forward-thinking and successful models for internationalizing the campus, study abroad, and international partnerships.

In winning an Honorable Mention in the Internationalizing the Community College category for its Mexico Project, PCC was recognized for its agreements and programs that seek to honor and expand economic, education and community connections to Mexico. Activities include:

  • Collaboration with the Mexican Consulate on a wide variety of initiatives, including the opening last week of an Education Orientation Window at the consulate, where Mexican nationals and Mexican-Americans can learn about education opportunities in Tucson and Mexico.
  • Strengthening partnerships with the Institute for Mexicans Abroad and other Mexico institutions, which have helped offer over 340 scholarships to Mexican-origin and Hispanic students.
  • Increasing the College’s involvement in a Mexican government program that provides financial and entrepreneurship education to the Mexican community in the U.S.
  • Faculty training programs, conversation partners and peer mentoring
