PCC Awards Alberding Math Scholarships to Two Students, Tutors at East Campus

April 10, 2014

Annual Alberding Amble run, which helps fund the awards, is April 12

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College has announced two recipients of its 2014 Art Alberding Math Scholar Award.

Both recipients, Phillip Showers and Hoang Le, are students and tutors at PCC’s East Campus.

Showers is a math, chemistry, physics and writing tutor and is working on a design project with an industrial engineer. He intends to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The University of Arizona.

“I want to innovate and change our current standards for consumer electronics,” Showers says.

Le is a math/chemistry tutor and wants to become a mechanical engineer.

“I help other students move from the fear zone – scared of math, to love learning math,” she says.

The Art Alberding Math Scholar Award is presented annually to qualifying PCC students. It is named after Art Alberding, Ph.D., one of the first members of the Colleges’ math faculty. In 2013, the college gave two awards. Besides donations through the PCC Foundation, the scholarships are funded through proceeds from the annual Alberding Amble 5K and 1-mile Fun Run/Walk. This year’s event is Saturday, April 12 at Lincoln Park, 4325 S. Pantano Road. You can register for the event online anytime or in-person the day of the event. You also may donate through the Foundation.

“We are really proud of Phillip and Hoang, two exceptional students who are dedicated to using their talents to help others,” department chair Mehtlan says.
