PCC Family Heritage Celebration Highlights Tucson’s Diversity

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College is inviting the public to participate in a project showcasing the rich cultural heritage and diversity of the Tucson area.

The College’s first Family Heritage Celebration will use digital images submitted by the public to compose a visual presentation that will be displayed online and shown at PCC’s Theatre Arts musical production of “Fiddler on the Roof.”

“This is an opportunity for our community to come together and share their unique family stories, celebrate their family heritage and learn about other cultures,” said Geneva Escobedo, chairperson of PCC’s Family Heritage Celebration Committee. “We are thrilled to be organizing this project and encourage our friends and neighbors throughout our community to take part in the celebration.”

“Fiddler on the Roof” is a fun family musical set in a Jewish village in early 20th century Russia. The story revolves around a hardworking but poor father of five daughters as he tries to preserve his heritage amid numerous outside forces.

To take part in PCC’s Family Heritage Celebration, participants may submit one of the following:

  • A digital photo of your ancestor or ancestors;
  • A digital photo of a family heritage artifact, such as jewelry, clothing, art or household objects;
  • A digital photo of body art related to your family heritage; and
  • A poem or short story related to your family heritage (less than 250 words and written in the body of the email).

The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2014. Email submissions to  There is no cost to submit your entry.

Digital images must be in a high resolution jpeg format no larger than 10MB.  Submissions must also include submitter’s name, name of individuals in the photo or artifact and the significance to you, family ancestry (ethnic/cultural heritage, country of origin), and any other relevant information.

The kick-off for PCC’s Family Heritage Celebration is scheduled for February 20, 2014, at PCC Center for the Arts Recital Hall, West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Road, 6-7:15 p.m.  The play begins at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $18 with discounts for students, seniors, PCC employees and groups.
