Matthias Düwel was born in Berlin, Germany. He received his Meisterschüler (MFA) from the Universität der Künste Berlin in 1983. The following year he was awarded a German Academic Exchange fellowship to New York City where he was made artist in residence at NYU Deutsches Haus and given a post-graduate fellowship to the N.Y. Studio School. In 1986 he received a Pollock-Krasner grant award. Since then he has had numerous solo exhibits, including in NYC, LA, San Francisco, Berlin, and Paris.

From 1998 to 2004 he worked as an adjunct professor at Parsons School of Design teaching painting, drawing and multimedia courses. In 2004 after 20 years of working, painting and teaching in NYC, Düwel moved to Oracle, Arizona. In 2005 he became full-time faculty at Pima Community College where he teaches 2D Studio Art classes and also serves as the Discipline Coordinator for General Education Art and Art History.

My recent work deconstructs the false notion of a free, orderly and stable society. Individualism and self-determination are populist ideals – but they are false idols. Reality confronts us almost daily with the limits of this illusion, be it through acts of nature, pandemics, man-made catastrophes or through the indifference and ill will we show towards our fellow man.
