The Information Technology Technician is the first level of a two level information technology technician series. Incumbents perform skilled technical level duties for multiple site locations in the operation and support of PC hardware and software, scheduling and controlling computer production processing, the operation and College-wide support of telephone and data network equipment, or the maintenance of personal computers in a networked environment. The Information Technology Technician is distinguished from the Information Technology Specialist which has responsibility for performing highly skilled technical level work and has lead responsibility.


These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

  1. Schedules and delivers computers and instructional media equipment needed for instructional and administrative purposes and college- wide events; installs software and hardware, configures, programs, tests, and operates a variety of technical equipment.  Daily 20%
  2. Troubleshoots, tracks and resolves problems; reviews schedules or work orders for timely and appropriate action; prepares and maintains daily activity logs.  Daily 20%
  3. Performs technical support for staff, administrators, faculty and students and College sponsored events.  Daily 15%
  4. Maintains and repairs College-owned equipment.  Daily 10%
  5. Monitors systems; takes appropriate corrective action or refers escalated issues to supervisor.  Daily 10%
  6. Performs system back-up and restoration procedures.  Daily 5%
  7. Compiles information for reports and presentations.  Daily 5%
  8. Maintains an inventory and orders of computer supplies and equipment as directed; assists with the removal or disposal of outdated supplies and equipment following established procedures.  Weekly 5%
  9. Performs basic programming of macros, web pages, and other routine applications.  Weekly 5%
  10. Organizes, maintains, verifies, and updates operational procedures and manuals.  Quarterly 5%
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.


Incumbents assigned to Network Support:

  • Installs, sets-up, programs, tests, and maintains college-wide telephone and data network equipment
  • Programs and sets-up voice mail and call accounting systems
  • Provides technical assistance and instruction on the use of telephones and voice mail to end-users
  • Monitors telephone and data network switch usage
  • Responds to and resolves problems associated with voice and data network equipment

Incumbents assigned to User Support:

  • Installs tests documents operates, maintains, and integrates client computers in a networked environment
  • Participates in the design and development of client computer software specifications and standards
  • Maintains, distributes, and documents software licensing and vendor maintenance agreements
  • Trains end-users on the use of hardware and software
  • Supports software licensing and vendor maintenance agreements
  • Provides technical assistance to end users

Training and Experience (positions in this class typically require):

High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Degree, and two years computer technical experience; or

High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Degree  and Certification in areas of IT, including cyber security, enterprise data storage, project management, cloud computing, analytics and data management, application development, architecture methodologies, IT service management, networking and wireless; and one year of technical experience; or

or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licensing/Certification Requirements for some positions in this class may require:

  • Valid Arizona driver’s license

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, manual dexterity, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts and electrical currents.
