Class Specification Title: Information Technology Specialist

Series: Information Technology - Technician

The Information Technology Specialist is the second level of a two level information technology technician series. Incumbents perform highly skilled technical level work and/or lead duties for multiple site locations in the area of information technology. This includes operations, administration and support of college-wide systems, programming and other technical work. The Information Technology Specialist is distinguished from the Information Technology Technician by its responsibility for performing skilled level duties and its lead responsibility.


These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

  1. Serves as a lead to staff in providing direction on processes and procedures; schedules activities; and monitors workflow.  Daily 0%-20%
  2. Troubleshoots computer software, hardware, and voice or network problems and determines the appropriate means for rectifying the situation; performs complex maintenance and repair of computer software, hardware and peripherals to include technology requirements for access and disabled student resources and instructional media; contacts service contractors for major hardware malfunctions; schedules and oversees regular computer preventive maintenance.  Daily 20%
  3. Operates or administers servers, computer workstations, and voice or network equipment; ensures back-up procedures and security measures are followed, configures users, and performs installations and upgrades. Daily 20%
  4. Provides information and guidance to College employees on technology systems and techniques, applications, utilities, operation, and uses of computer hardware, software and peripheral equipment.  Daily 15%
  5. Compiles data, prepares and reviews a variety of reports; identifies trends; recommends solutions and resources. Daily 10%
  6. Maintains records of work activities and documents recurring, difficult or complex problems.  Daily 10%
  7. Works with staff and other College departments to develop and document methods and processes in an effort to improve product quality and client satisfaction.  Weekly 5%
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.


Incumbents assigned to Network Support:

  • Oversees and participates in the installation, set-up, programming, and maintenance of telephone and wired or wireless data network equipment
  • Provides complex technical assistance and instruction on use of telephones and voice mail to end-users
  • Interfaces with vendors and external contractors regarding voice and data network equipment

Incumbents assigned to User Support Service:

  • Provides support services BOG meetings, Provost Speaker series, and off-site College events
  • Provides level 2 support for Enterprise Systems for students, faculty, and staff
  • Troubleshoots and resolve 24/7 call center student escalation issues of students, faculty, and staff
  • Provides technical support for District, Maintenance and Security, and Green Valley

Incumbent assigned to Video Production:

  • Focuses on operational engineering tasks; provides system support for digital high definition hardware and software components and peripherals foundational to productions and distribution activities.
  • Performs engineering tasks that involve maintenance, troubleshooting and operations of computer systems such as work stations, servers that are utilized in networking, digital storage, file conversion, and other similar functions.
  • Oversees, diagnoses, repairs, and cleans a variety of audio visual, video, computer and/or electronic equipment
  • Sets up, controls and monitors television broadcasting equipment to transmit television programs, satellite conferences, media duplications and studio operation needs
  • Shoots and edits tele-courses, college productions and events and works with external clients on production projects.

Training and Experience (positions in this class typically require):

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree, and three years technical experience, or

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree  and Certification in areas of IT, including cyber security, enterprise data storage, project management, cloud computing, analytics and data management, application development, architecture methodologies, IT service management, networking and wireless; and two years of technical experience; or

or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Associate's Degree preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
