Career and Technical Education (CTE) General Education Requirements

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) general education requirements are listed below. These requirements apply to the Associate of Applied Science and Associate of General Studies programs.

 Important: Always consult your specific degree program or your advisor to identify the required courses for your degree. Specific degrees may require core or support courses that already fulfill these requirements. 

To complete the General Education requirement, one course must include either the Cultural Diversity (C) or Global Awareness (G) designation. Courses may not be used to complete more than one requirement.

Communication Requirement (3 credits)

The following courses satisfy the Communication requirement:

Arts & Humanities Requirement (3 credits)

Any course from the following lists satisfies the Arts & Humanities requirement:

Social & Behavioral Sciences Requirement (3 credits)

Any course from the following lists satisfies the Social & Behavioral Sciences requirement:

Math or Science Requirement (3 credits)

To fulfill this requirement, you must complete both the basic math competency and one course from either the Math or Science categories.

The math competency must be met before you can complete the Math or Science requirement.

Math Competency

The math competency can be met by any one of the following:

  1. Completing one of the courses from the Math Category listed below with a “C” or better
  2. Any of the following cut scores on a Mathematics placement test:
    • 85 or higher on the Accuplacer Elementary Math
    • 41 or higher on the Accuplacer College Level Math
    • 250 or higher on the Next Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics
    • 225 or higher on the Next Generation Advanced Algebra and Functions
  3. Completing MAT 092 , MAT 095 or MAT 097 with a “C” or better*
  4. In some cases, test scores from previous placement test may be used to meet the math competency

* Credits earned in MAT 092 , MAT 095, MAT 097 will not apply to general education credits, but completing one of these courses does meet the math competency.

Other Requirement (3 credits)

Before selecting a course, contact your program to determine which course is required for your program of study.

Courses that may satisfy the requirement are:

  • An additional communication course (CMN 102†, CMN 120†, JRN 101, WRT 102 or a course from the Communication requirement list)
  • An additional Arts & Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences or Science or Mathematics course from the above lists
  • A computer literacy course (CIS 104 or CIS 120)

 Suggested for students who may transfer.
