@PimaNews Summer Schedule
The May 16 @PimaNews will be the final issue of the spring 2024 semester. The summer schedule is May 30, June 13 and 27, July 11 and 25, and Aug. 8 and 22. The first issue of fall 2024 is Aug. 29. The deadline for submitting announcements is noon, Mondays, the week of publication. And items should be limited to 75 words. 

EGTSS Summit on Climate Action, Sustainability and Eco-Justice, May 10
The 8th Annual Ethnic, Gender, Transborder Studies and Sociology Summit on Climate Action, Sustainability, and Eco-Justice: Thinking Globally, Acting Locally is May 10. This free, public event is 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the West Campus Proscenium Theatre. The event will feature Ami Vitale, an award-winning, internationally recognized National Geographic photographer, Nikon Ambassador and documentary filmmaker. Her work spans themes from war to wildlife around the globe, including the Middle East, Africa and China. Local experts and activists address local issues and offer workshops for hands-on skills to create solutions. Also, part of the event are student exhibits, tabling by community groups and cultural performances. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided to full-day registrants. Staff Professional Development Funds Applications for Non-Exempt and Exempt Employees
Starting June 3, 2024, the Staff Professional Development (SPD) Working Group will accept Professional Development/Educational Funds applications for fiscal year 2025 (July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025) for eligible regular full-time non-exempt and exempt staff (director level and below). 

Do not use the current application that is on the intranet to apply for FY25 funds, as a new form will be posted on June 3. FY25 applications received using the FY24 form will be deleted. The first round of SPD applications will be reviewed after July 15. The application form, as well as related guidelines and policies, can be found on the Human Resources>>Organizational Effectiveness & Development intranet page. For questions, email [email protected]. Supervisors and employees should discuss their SPD application prior to submitting it and supervisors must send their approval email to [email protected]. Applications without a supervisor’s approval email, will delay review of the application. 

Faculty and adjunct faculty should contact their division for assistance with applying for Faculty Professional Development Funds. 

Note that the cutoff to submit current fiscal year applications (FY24) is 5 p.m., June 14.

Downtown Campus Market on the Move May 9
The last Market on the Move event of the semester at Downtown Campus is May 9, 9-11 a.m. All proceeds earned during the event fund the Downtown Campus hygiene pantry. Take advantage of this resource and help support our learners! 

First come, first served! Buy as many as you want! 

  • $10 cash for drive-through box, west of the Advanced Manufacturing Building
  • $5 cash for a walk-up box, south of the ST Building

Celebrating Outstanding Student Workers and Their Supervisors
Pima celebrated National Student Employment Week (NSEW) April 8-12 with the Student Employee of the Year Awards Ceremony. Nominations for student employees and student employee supervisors were received and evaluated.

Here is the list of nominees and winners and photos from the event. Congratulations to the Student Employee of the Year Sam Salapanov and the Student Employee Supervisor of the Year Jodi Perin. Please join the College in congratulating them on their contributions to Pima and the community.

Thanks also to the event volunteers and evaluation committee, as well as Charles Wacker, Michael Lich, Greg Wilson, Irene Robles-Lopez, Marcy Euler, Haziel Lopez, Micah Turpin and Jeff Thies, and to the Pima Foundation for supporting the event. If you hire students, don’t forget to submit a nomination next year in January 2025.

Completion Ceremonies May 16
The College community is invited to completion ceremonies for ESL-English for Academic and Professional Purposes and Translation and Interpretation Studies Program on May 16 in the Amethyst Room at Downtown Campus.

SanScript Launch Party May 9
The SandScript launch party is 6 p.m. May 9 in the Amethyst Room at Downtown Campus. Everyone is invited. SandScript showcases artistic and written works by currently enrolled students, and the magazine is curated, edited and designed entirely by Pima students enrolled in WRT 162. 

Cababi Release Party May 17
The release party for Cababi, Pima employees’ literary and arts magazine, is 6-8 p.m., May 17 in C105 at District Office. The 2022-2024 issue will be unveiled, with printed copies available. The event includes drinks, refreshments, readings by the authors and video tours of the artists’ studios.

The Brightspace Bulletin is a newsletter providing updates and tips on D2L, upcoming training and important announcements. It’s designed to keep you informed about all the latest developments related to Brightspace.

Fire Academy Live-fire Demonstration, Graduation May 19-20
Join the Fire Academy recruits as they conduct their final live-fire demonstration for their families, friends and the Pima community 6:30 p.m., May 19 at the City of Tucson Public Safety Academy, 10001 S. Wilmot Road.

Everyone also is invited to the Fire Academy Class 2024-01 graduation 6 p.m., May 20 at West Campus Center for the Arts – Proscenium Theatre. 

Pima’s FYE Seeks Faculty, Staff Volunteers for Summer Orientations
Pima’s First Year Experiences seeks faculty and staff volunteers for its summer Connect U Orientations. Volunteers will assist with campus tours and breakout room rotations. Dates, descriptions and other details are available in the CUO Volunteer Interest form. Submissions are due by May 10. A virtual training will be held at 10 a.m. May 31. Therapeutic Massage Appointments Available Thursdays Through May 16
The Northwest Campus Massage Clinic offers quality massage services to students, staff and the public through May 16. A 50-minute massage is $20 for Pima employees and students with a Pima A#, and $30 for the public. The clinic is in A211 and appointment dates and times are:

  • Thursdays, through May 16 at 10:30 and 11:35 a.m., and 12:40 and 1:45 p.m.

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative COVID-19 test in the previous 24 hours is required. Therapeutic Massage is not appropriate for anyone with serious or uncontrolled medical conditions, contagious illness or fever, or for women who are pregnant. To schedule an appointment, call 520-206-2062. Prepayment required.

  • Juried Student Art Exhibition Downtown 1Art, May 13.   • “The Oppenheimers: One is Dad, Dimensions of Engineering,” through June 7, Desert Vista Art Gallery, Desert Vista Campus. Free. This exhibit is a narrative of Ernesto A. Trujillo’s father’s tenure in the defense industry through mixed-media prints. His father’s military experience was marred by the quest for more efficient weapons, leading to haunting nightmares. Trujillo’s exhibition offers a glimpse into the darker aspects of innovation. For more information, contact David Andres.
