Assessment of Prior Learning

You can earn Pima College credit for knowledge and skills you already possess.

Credits earned by examination

  • may fulfill some Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) or Occupational General Education requirements.
  • may transfer to other colleges or universities.
  • are recorded as P grades for specific courses.
  • does not count toward the 15 required credit hours at Pima.
  • cannot be used to qualify for veterans benefits.

To receive credit you must

  • be currently enrolled at Pima.
  • pass specific examinations or portfolio.

You cannot test for a course

  • that is lower than one in which you're currently enrolled.
  • for which you have already received credit.

 These exams can earn you Pima College credit:

Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Programs
AP and IB courses help you accelerate your college career while attending high school. Tests are given at the end of the classes.

Pima College accepts up to AP and IB 30 credits.

College-level Examination Program
CLEP exams let you obtain credits without enrolling in the related course. Each test requires payment of a registration service fee and an examination fee.

Five General Examinations cover college mathematics, English composition, humanities, natural science or social sciences/history.

Subject Examinations cover 29 subjects.

CLEP exams are offered at Pima's Northwest Campus, the University of Arizona, and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (for those with base access only).  Additional information is available online.

Proficiency Exam
You can take a special exam under limited circumstances if you believe other experiences gave you the required knowledge for a course.

  • Available at the discretion of the instructor.
  • You must register and pay for the course before completing the exam.
