Assessment

1. Assessment Requirements for Pre-Admission:

A. PCC Assessments: Students who wish to begin coursework in the Post Degree Teacher Certification Program must first take the Program-approved assessment tests. Please refer to the Student Handbook for additional details.

Note: Students who live outside the Tucson region should contact the Teacher Education Office at teachereducation@pima.edu or 520.206.6566 for assistance with assessments.

In order to take the assessments at a PCC campus or learning center, students should:

  • Have an active Pima Student ID number. If necessary, submit a Pima Community College application in order to secure an ID.
  • Bring photo identification to the testing site.
  • All students: Request the E-Write Writing Assessment (be sure to ask for it by name).
  • Elementary and Special Education students: Also request the Compass Math Assessment.

These assessments:

  • Are free of charge.
  • Are offered at most campus and learning center sites - please call ahead to confirm.
  • May be taken without an appointment.
  • Are computer generated.
  • Require approximately 1.5 hours each to complete.

B. TOEFL Test: Non-native English speakers who have earned a bachelor’s degree in a language other than English must achieve one of the following TOEFL scores prior to completing any other pre-admission requirements:

2. Assessments Requirements for Formal Admission:

Students who wish to continue in the Program must meet the assessment placement and other formal admission requirements prior to formal admission and registering for Methods courses.

  • Writing: All Program students must place into Writing 101 on a Program-approved writing assessment.
  • Math: All Elementary and Special Education students must place into Math 142 or Math 151 on a Program-approved math assessment.

Assessment Preparation and Remediation:

Math practice preparation tests are available online. Additional math self-study and review sites include www.math.com and www.purplemath.com.

Students who do not meet placement requirements after taking their first assessment(s) should contact the Program Advisor to discuss a remediation plan. Call 520.206.6408 to arrange an appointment after all pre-admission requirements have been met.
