Arizona AARP Director Meets Baby Boomers at PCC Event Oct. 29

Plus 50 Encore Completion Program Kick-Off promotes training those 50 and older for healthcare, education and social services jobs 

Tucson, AZ – On Tuesday, the head of AARP in Arizona helps Pima Community College mark its part in a national push to train Baby Boomers for jobs in high-demand services that give back to the community. 

David M. Mitchell, Arizona Director of AARP, is keynote speaker at the Plus 50 Encore Completion Program Kick-Off on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at PCC’s East Campus.

From 4 to 7 p.m., those 50 and older are encouraged to attend and meet PCC faculty and staff, as well as community partners and employers committed to the success of Plus 50 students. Mitchell will speak as part of a program that begins at 5:30 p.m., when PCC Chancellor Lee Lambert and PCC East Campus Vice President of Student Development Nancee Sorenson will talk more about Plus 50.

“The 1,800 students age 50 and older who attend PCC each semester contribute unique perspectives that enrich the College,” said Lambert. “We fully support our older students as they transition into new careers that benefit the community and contribute to the economic development of Tucson.”

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), sponsor of Plus 50, recently chose Pima to join the Plus 50 Encore Completion Program, a national effort to train 10,000 baby boomers nationwide for new jobs in healthcare, education and social services. PCC is one of approximately 100 participating colleges.

Pima’s Plus 50 program will help adults age 50 and older complete certificates or degrees in high-demand occupations in various healthcare, social services and education services. PCC’s goal is to increase access to learning for people 50 and older, and to maximize the marketability of Plus 50 students seeking employment.

The program will provide such support services as academic advising, training and workshops to help them complete their training, explore careers, network in their new professions and get jobs.

Among PCC’s partners in the program are Pima Council on Aging, Southern Arizona VA Health Care System and Pima County One-Stop.

The Plus 50 Encore Completion Program is funded with a $3.2 million grant to AACC provided by Deerbrook Charitable Trust. PCC was awarded $16,000 over three years. For more information about the Plus 50 Initiative at AACC, see http://plus50.aacc.nche.edu.
