PCC Instructor’s April 2 Talk: Why We Know What We Know

April 1, 2013

Tucson, AZ – Enjoy a thought-provoking presentation by Dr. Jerry Gill, Humanities Faculty, at the last Pima Community College Speakers’ Series this spring semester.

The presentation, “Knowing Is as Knowing Does,” takes place April 2 at 6 at PCC.

Dr. Gill will examine the basic insights of Michael Polanyi, a Hungarian-British philosopher, on the notion of “tacit knowing.”  Dr. Gill will explain the long standing divide between those who work with the scientific, objective approach to knowledge and those who work with a more intuitive approach.

“Polanyi’s insights, in my opinion, enable us to understand the basis and patterns of knowing, without separating the sciences from the creative arts and religious concerns,” Gill Said.

Gill has taught at several small colleges around the country over the past 40 years and has been with Pima for more than 10 years, teaching Philosophy, Religious Studies and Humanities.  He received his Ph.D. from Duke University and has published several journal articles and books.

The Speakers’ Series is sponsored by the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Jerry Migler and PCC Faculty Senate.  The series, in its third year, showcases the expertise and accomplishments of PCC’s faculty.
