PCC to Host Celebration to Honor Mentors and Mentoring Programs

January 23, 2013

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College is partnering with the Southern Arizona Mentoring Coalition to host a celebration honoring mentors and mentoring programs that serve at-risk youth in Southern Arizona.

The event, part of National Mentoring Month, will take place on Friday, Jan. 25 from 8-11:30 a.m. at the Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre, West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Road.

The Southern Arizona Mentoring Coalition’s mission is to encourage, develop, strengthen and sustain quality youth mentoring programs and mentoring relationships in our region.

Individuals and organizations interested in supporting Southern Arizona youth are encouraged to attend to learn about mentoring opportunities, options and impacts in Southern Arizona and how to become part of the solution.

A variety of local mentoring organizations will be available to answer questions about becoming a mentor, being a mentor or getting a mentor.  For those who have already started a mentoring program or would like to enhance their mentoring program, opportunities to register for training also will be available.

PCC, in partnership with the Alcumnus Institute, will be offering mentoring training, “Fundamentals of Basic Mentoring,” beginning on January 25.  This workshop will also be offered on February 16 and March 16.  A “Training the Trainer: Effective Strategies for Mentoring Youth” workshop will be offered on Thursdays, Feb. 7-April 26.

These training programs use proven, research-based best practices to achieve desired outcomes and are open to all members of the community.  All trainings take place at PCC Community Campus, 401 N. Bonita Ave.  For more information on enrolling in the mentoring training workshops, call Noncredit Continuing education, (520) 206-6579.
