Event Celebrates Midcentury Design in the Old Pueblo

Tucson, AZ -- Pima Community College is pleased to announce its sponsorship of Tucson Modernism Week, a project aimed at preserving and celebrating midcentury design and architecture in the Old Pueblo.

Tucson Modernism Week is a series of events, lectures and tours focusing on the modernist buildings on Broadway Boulevard between Country Club and Campbell Avenue. It is organized by the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation.

"Pima Community College is excited about the opportunity to work with the Foundation to help educate our fellow Tucsonans about this important part of our past," said Interim Chancellor Dr. Suzanne Miles. "We are honored to be able to play a role in building a greater appreciation of our city's historic character."

Pima and the Foundation collaborated earlier this year on a preservation project that brought four historic neon signs to PCC's Downtown Campus. The signs were lighted at a sock hop celebration that included Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and other dignitaries.

"The Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation considers Pima an invaluable partner in our effort to protect Tucson's heritage," said Demion Clinco, the organization's president. "By sponsoring Tucson Modernism Week, Pima has found a new and exciting way to enrich and educate our community."

Tucson Modernism Week kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9 with a talk by Anne Rysdale, who for many years was the only registered female architect practicing in Arizona. The festivities end at noon on Sunday, Nov. 11 with a walking tour of the Tucson Community Center landscape designed by the landscape architect Garrett Eckbo.

In between, there will be a "Big Retro Slide Show" by Charles Phoenix, a lecture on neckties of the 1940s, an exhibition on midcentury automobile design and much more. Tickets and reservations are required for some of the 23 events.
