PCC Welcomes County Support of Adult Education

June 19, 2012

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College Interim Chancellor Dr. Suzanne Miles is welcoming a decision by the Board of Supervisors to provide $250,000 for adult education.

“Investing in education is the wisest investment we can make,” Dr. Miles said after attending Tuesday morning’s vote. “It is an investment which benefits our entire community. The Board of Supervisors did the right thing.”

Over the past five years, Pima County has contributed more than $1.23 million to Pima Community College Adult Education (PCCAE).

Since July of last year, 1,279 students have received General Educational Development certificates through PCCAE. About 300 men and women received their GEDs earlier this month at graduation, including a 78-year-old great-grandmother.

PCC Adult Education administers free programs in Adult Basic Education, GED preparation and testing, English-language acquisition for adults and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, as well as programs in civics, family literacy, refugee education and education for adults with developmental disabilities.

PCC recently expanded the number of its GED testing sites.
