Moms, Community Leaders to Participate in March 30 PCC Ceremony Honoring Fallen Troops

March 29, 2012

Tucson, AZ – A mom who lost a child in service to our country is scheduled to take part in a ceremony at Pima Community College’s Downtown Campus on March 30 in memory of America’s military men and women who died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The remembrance will begin at 7 a.m. in the courtyard of Downtown Campus, 1255 N. Stone Ave. The name of each fallen hero will be read, followed by the ringing of a bell.

Gold Star mom Sheron Jones is scheduled to read from 8:15 a.m.-9 a.m.

American Gold Star Mothers is an organization of moms who have lost a son or daughter in the service of our country.

Also, three Blue Star moms -- Carol Bowers, Rachelle Hornby and Jacqueline Gordon -- are scheduled to read from 9 a.m.-9:30 a.m.

Membership in Blue Star Mothers of America is open to any woman living in the United States who has a son or daughter in the U.S. armed forces, or who has had a child who has been honorably discharged.

It will take 10-12 hours to read the names of the more than 6,000 Americans who have lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as reported in a recent Arizona Daily Star article. The event is open to the public.

Also scheduled to read are:

  • 7:15 a.m. – Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild
  • 10:30 a.m. – Sherryn “Vikki” Marshall, PCC Governing Board member
  • 11:30 a.m. – Arizona Rep. Terri Proud
  • 12:15 p.m. – Ron Barber, district director for former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords
  • 2:15 p.m. – Arizona Sen. Paula Aboud

To volunteer, contact PCC Downtown Campus Vice President of Student Development Jerry Haynes at 206-7263 or jehaynes@pima.edu.

The ceremony is being held in conjunction with a March 31 citywide parade to salute veterans and active-duty personnel in the U.S. armed services who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan.

Many members of the PCC community -- students and employees who served in the military – also are planning to participate in the Tucson’s Welcome Home Veterans Parade on March 31.

About 10 Motorcycle Rider Education instructors will be participating in the parade.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Tucson. The parade route will start north on Stone Avenue and continue on Pennington Street, then move west on Franklin street turning south on Main Avenue, east on Alameda street, and south on Church to end back on Pennington and Stone.
