Four PCC Students Earn National Honors in Scholarship Competition

Tucson, AZ -- Four Pima Community College students have been recognized nationally for their efforts in the 2012 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team scholarship competition.

Adam James has been named a 2012 Coca-Cola New Century Scholar for earning the top rating in Arizona in the scholarship competition. He will receive a $2,000 scholarship and a plaque. James attends PCC’s East Campus. He is pursuing an Associate of Science degree and will transfer to the University of Arizona to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Molecular & Cellular Biology.

Maya Swainson has been named a Coca-Cola Gold Scholar and will receive a $1,500 scholarship and a gold medallion. She attends Community Campus and is studying Speech Language and Hearing Sciences.

Sharon Buhs and Lorre Laws have been named Coca-Cola Silver Scholars. Each will receive a $1,250 scholarship and a silver medallion. Buhs attends East Campus. She is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Programming and will transfer to Northern Arizona University. Laws attends Desert Vista Campus, is majoring in Nursing and will transfer to the University of Arizona.

More than 1,700 community college students nationwide applied to take part in the competition. Students were judged on the academic rigor of their studies, leadership, and campus and community involvement by staff of the Phi Theta Kappa scholastic honor society and business and education leaders from across the nation.

Phi Theta Kappa, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,280 chapters on college campuses around the world.
