PCC Adult Education to Celebrate Adult Literacy Week

February 14, 2012

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College is joining other literacy groups from across the state to celebrate Arizona Adult Literacy Week, an annual event celebrating adult literacy and lifelong learning.

“The need for a highly literate citizenry is growing rapidly as Arizona moves toward an increasingly technological future,” Gov. Jan Brewer said in proclaiming February 12-18 as Adult Literacy Week.

“The governor hit the nail on the head,” said Deborah Gaddy, PCC’s dean of Adult Education. “Education plays a key role in supporting the economic vitality of Arizona, and Arizona Adult Literacy Week emphasizes adult education’s vital economic and social contributions.”

PCC will mark the week in numerous ways. On Feb. 17, there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the future home of one of the three Adult Education Learning Centers at the former Roberts Elementary School.

The College also will participate in a Fall in Love with Literacy Event; a National Adult Education Honor Society Induction Ceremony; and a Laps for Literacy Fun Run/Walk.

Additionally, PCC student leaders will receive special recognition awards from the Arizona Department of Education for their participation in the Arizona Adult Education Ambassador Leadership program and activities during the Arizona Adult Learner Awards Celebration at the Carnegie Center in Phoenix.

“Pima Community College plays a critical role in promoting adult literacy,” Gaddy said. “For more than 40 years, PCC Adult Education has provided adult learners in Pima County with opportunities to increase basic skills, prepare to earn a GED, learn English, learn the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship, increase civic involvement and participate in family literacy.”
