PCC Chancellor to Undergo Heart Surgery

October 7, 2011

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College Chancellor Dr. Roy Flores told members of the faculty and staff today that he will undergo triple-bypass heart surgery.

“I feel strong and have been running regularly, but my doctor tells me that there is some blockage in my arteries that we need to address,” Dr. Flores said. “He also tells me that I’m in excellent shape otherwise, a perfect candidate for this kind of procedure, and I can look forward to a full recovery in four to six weeks.”

The surgery will take place Friday, Oct. 14 at Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute.

Dr. Suzanne Miles, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of the College and President of the Community Campus, will assume some of Dr. Flores’ day-to-day responsibilities. Dr. John Carroll, Acting Vice President of Instruction at the Community Campus and former acting Superintendent of the Tucson Unified School District, will assume some of Dr. Miles’ duties at the Community Campus.

“I have every confidence in our team, and I know that students and faculty will not notice any difference in College operations,” Dr. Flores said. “I will be in regular contact with my staff from home, particularly with regard to budget and planning issues.”

Dr. Miles is a 26-year veteran of PCC, where she has held numerous administrative positions. As Provost, she serves as the College’s chief academic officer.

“We expect College operations to continue to run smoothly,” Dr. Miles said. “Dr. Flores has assembled a team of dedicated professionals who are all devoted to education and serving our community. We will hold down the fort while he is away.”

Dr. Flores has been PCC Chancellor since March 2003.
