September 21, 2011

Tucson, AZ –Pima Community College’s Truck Driver Training Program is offering financial assistance to students thinking about getting started in one of the nation’s most in-demand careers.

The assistance will help offset fees, textbooks and course materials to qualified students. Recipients will be selected by PCC Foundation.

“Pima’s Truck Driver Training Program provides direct, intensive training in a line of work that analysts predict will see tremendous growth,” said Stan Steinman, PCC’s dean of workforce and business development.  “We give students the skills they need to succeed.”

According to recent news reports, the number of truck drivers is growing at less than 1 percent per year while the freight industry is growing at closer to 4 percent per year.  And according to data collected by the U.S. Department of Labor, a general freight truck driver in Arizona, on average, earns a starting salary of approximately $40,000 a year.

To be eligible for financial assistance, a student must:

  • Be enrolled in the program and meet all program requirements;
  • Demonstrate financial need; and
  • Commit to completing the four-week weekday program or the ten-week weekend program.

Scholarship applications are available at Pima’s Truck Driver Training site located at 6680 South Country Club Road.  Scholarship applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, year- round.
