September 23, 2011
Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College is proud to host “Solar Power 101,” part of a community education series on solar energy presented by the office of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, on September 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Amethyst Room of Downtown Campus, 1255 N. Stone Ave.
The focus of the free event is “Solar Jobs and Southern Arizona.” Speakers will discuss opportunities available and skills required for employment in the region’s solar power industry.
The U.S. solar industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the economy. According to a new survey by the non-profit Solar Foundation, the industry employed 100,237 Americans as of last month. Solar businesses added 6,735 new workers since August 2010 – a 6.8 percent growth rate.
Speakers include Dr. Chien-Wei Han, PCC Solar Technologies instructor. Dr. Han will discuss “Community Colleges and Solar Training.”
“Pima Community College has an important role to play regarding solar power,” says Dr. Han, whose presentation will include an overview of PCC courses in photovoltaic technology and solar water heating. “The more people learn about solar power, the more likely they are to use it and support it.”
