PCC Presents Chamber Music by Brahms, Schumann
August 30, 2011
Tucson AZ – Pima Community College performing arts department presents its first recital of the 2011-2012 season with “Chamber Music by Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann” featuring PCC music faculty Dr. Alexander Tentser, piano; Anna Gendler, violin; Dr. Mark Nelson, tuba; and Theodore Buchholz, cello, on Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Recital Hall.
The program includes two magnificent trios by Brahms: “Trio for Violin, French Horn and Piano in E flat Major” and “Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in C Minor;” along with “Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Minor” by Schumann, who was a mentor and a friend of Brahms.
Brahms was a young man when he met Schumann, who was already an established composer. Schumann began his career as a composer of brilliant piano pieces but gradually spread out into symphonic and chamber music genres. His wife Clara was known all over Europe as a great piano virtuoso. Schumann and his wife were very enthusiastic about Brahms's music and their support meant a lot to Brahms, particularly in the beginning of his career. Brahms always referred to Schumann as "My Dear Master" and called himself Kapellmeister Kreisler in the manner of Schumann. Brahms also supported Clara and her children who were left alone after Schumann's tragic illness and death. Brahms was very critical of his early compositions and destroyed most of them. He was a great master of chamber music genres such as trios and quartets. Among his masterpieces are trios for horn and clarinet. It is interesting to note that after Brahms completed four symphonies, just like his mentor Schumann, he never returned back to it but concentrated chiefly on chamber music. All of these pieces belong to the golden repertoire of classical music.
