Joint TUSD-PCC Program Helps High School Students Achieve Goals
August 5, 2011
Tucson, AZ – Aztec Middle College is a unique and successful high school that since 1997 has helped high students chart a course for their individual academic futures.
This challenging, innovative and supportive program is an educational partnership between the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) and Pima Community College (PCC).
“Aztec Middle College is an excellent example of how Pima Community College and the Tucson Unified School District collaborate to give students pathways to higher education and a better future,” PCC Chancellor Dr. Roy Flores said.
"Aztec Middle College has been an integral part of our effort to address the unique needs of students throughout our district and the greater Tucson community,” TUSD Superintendent Dr. John Pedicone said. “That a student can complete high school while earning college credits after the prospect of high school graduation was in question is proof that this program works."
Aztec Middle College classes take place on PCC campuses, where students can earn a high school diploma from TUSD, as well as college credits.
Aztec students develop critical thinking skills while benefiting from innovative teaching and small classes. At Aztec, students can get a jump on a career/technical degree or job certification, take advantage of internships and job placement opportunities, and benefit from innovative teaching and learning. Emphasis is placed on student success, regular attendance, academic improvement and student retention.
All students ages 17 to 21 who live in Pima County are eligible to apply for admission to Aztec Middle College, which meets all Arizona Department of Education teaching and academic standards, and prepares students for successful completion of Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) testing. Pima Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. TUSD High Schools are currently accredited by AdvancED.
