February 18, 2010
Tucson, AZ – David Longoria yesterday was sworn in to serve on the Pima Community College Governing Board representing District 2. Pima County School Superintendent Dr. Linda Arzoumanian appointed Mr. Longoria to the Board following a review of candidates’ applications by a selection committee. Mr. Longoria is filling the unexpired term of Richard Fimbres, who resigned after being elected to the Tucson City Council in November. The term of the appointment continues through December 31, 2010. The position will appear on the November 2, 2010 ballot as a regular six-year term position.
Mr. Longoria received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Arizona in May 2008, graduating with honors. He anticipates completing his Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Arizona’s School of Government and Public Policy in May 2010. Last October he received a 40 Under 40 recognition from the Arizona Daily Star.
Mr. Longoria has been a coordinator of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Program in the Pima County Community Development and Neighborhood Conservation Department since 2002. He has worked closely with community leaders in more than 30 neighborhoods taking part in the Neighborhood Reinvestment Program, which utilizes voter-approved bond funds to construct small-scale capital improvement and revitalization projects.
He presently serves as the Vice Chair for the Pima County Regional Transportation Authority’s Citizens Accountability for Regional Transportation Committee.
At the February 17 Board meeting, the Board Approved a contract with the Carondelet Health Network to offer an Associate of Applied Science Nursing program to 30 Carondelet employees. The College and Carondelet have partnered since 2006 to enhance the health of the community by preparing skilled nurses. To date, 98 Carondelet employees have completed the program and 93 more currently are enrolled. The new program runs from August 2010 to December 2011.
In further action, the Board renewed Intergovernmental Agreements (IGAs) with the City of Tucson’s Fire and Police departments, Drexel Heights Fire District, Northwest Fire District and Tubac Fire District. The renewal of the IGAs through 2015 allows PCC’s Public Safety and Emergency Services Institute to continue to provide Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic classes to its partner agencies.
The next scheduled meeting of the Board will be Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at 7 p.m. in the PCC District Office Community/Board Room at 4905 E. Broadway.
