I. Purpose This regulation sets forth the standard for general education for the College. General education is that portion of the degree or certificate program that provides students with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are fundamental to every individual's effort to have a more satisfying life and to function as a more effective citizen. According to the State Board of Directors for Community Colleges of Arizona procedure SP7-604, an Arizona community college associate degree must include a minimum of eighteen (18) credits of general education. These requirements must be defined in the annual College catalog. In accordance with SP7-604, all of Pima Community College's degrees and certificates will a minimum of eighteen (18) general education credits. II. Roles and ResponsibilitiesA college-wide General Education Committee establishes criteria for general education. The development of general education courses is a college-wide endeavor with administrators providing leadership, faculty providing expertise, and college staff providing data and technical assistance. Specifically, a general education course proposal is submitted to the General Education Committee utilizing the criteria and procedures described in the Curriculum Procedures Manual. The General Education Committee reviews and comments on the course based on the general education criteria and recommends the course to the College Curriculum Council for inclusion in the general education portion of the College catalog. The College Curriculum Council is chaired by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Educational Services. The College's Board of Governors authorizes through the Senior Vice Chancellor for Educational Planning and Development the authority to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Educational Services to approve general education requirements and courses.
