Purpose

In March 2002, the Arizona State Board of Community Colleges was divested of its responsibility for certifying community college faculty.  Faculty certification authority was relegated to each of Arizona’s ten community college districts.  This regulation addresses together with BP-3001 the standards required for Pima Community College faculty, full-time and adjunct.

Implementation and responsibility of this regulation reside in the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Services.

Pima Standards

A Fulltime Faculty member who was initially employed with the College prior to July 1, 2007, and who possesses either (1) an Arizona Community College regular teaching certificate issued prior to July 1, 2002, or (2) a Pima Community College Faculty Standards Teaching award in one or more of the standard or transitional categories issued between July 1, 2002 and June 30, 2007, shall be considered as having met or being exempt from the requirement to meet the minimum Pima standards for teaching in the field(s) for which the certificate or award was issued.

As of July 1, 2007, all Adjunct Faculty members as well as those Fulltime Faculty members initially hired by the College after July 1, 2007, must meet the minimum Pima standards or be issued a Limited Exemption certificate in order to teach for the College.

Teaching Faculty and Curriculum Classifications
The minimum qualifications for both full time and adjunct teaching faculty are based on course classification:  The curriculum classifications are:  Academic (transfer, including general education), Developmental or Occupational/ Workforce courses.

Academic (Transfer)

  • Master’s degree in the teaching field or
  • Master’s in any teaching field with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field or
  • In disciplines where a master’s degree is not offered and the doctorate is the terminal degree, or where the candidate has opted not to receive a master’s degree during the course of study for the doctorate degree as a terminal degree, or where all but the dissertation of a doctorate degree has been obtained, 24 graduate semester hours in the teaching field are required.

Developmental

  • Same qualifications as those listed for Academic or
  • Bachelor’s degree in field to be taught or
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field with 24 lower/upper division semester credit hours in field to be taught.

Occupational/Workforce

  • Same qualification as those listed for Academic or
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field plus 3 years work experience in field to be taught, or
  • License in field to be taught and 5 years work experience in the teaching field or
  • Recognized certification in field to be taught and 5 years work experience in the teaching field or
  • 64 semester credit hours in field to be taught and 5 years work experience in the teaching field or
  • Associate’s Degree in any field and 5 years work experience in the teaching field.

Educational Support Faculty

Counselor

  • Master’s degree in counseling, counseling psychology, clinical psychology, rehabilitation counseling, career counseling, guidance counseling, social work or related field.

Librarian

  • Master’s Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association.

Pima Standards Categories

  • Standard (Academic, Developmental, Occupational/Workforce, Counselor, Librarian)

The faculty member has met the minimum requirements for the specific discipline (prefix) and classification with degrees and/or teaching field coursework.

  • Limited Exemption Renewable every two years*

This classification is reserved for individuals with unique qualifications for teaching, which may include but are not limited to those who are nationally or regionally recognized as experts in their field, those who have not completed the required number of graduate hours in the teaching field, and those who teach in subject areas that have proven difficult to staff (see SPG-3001/AA).  Certificates require the approval of the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Services with written recommendations from the Department Chair, Certification Standards Faculty, the Dean of Instruction and the Campus President.

*Calendar year commences at date of initial contract.
