WebCT Quick Reference Guide
This helpful guide can help you when you have a question about WebCT and how to use it. Please click on the topic(s) below that is most relevant to you: | | | | | | | | | | | | Assignments | | From the Assignment page, you can see when assignments are due, submit assignments, check your grades on completed assignments, and see if you have submitted assignments. To submit an assignment you must:
• Upload an assignment file(s). Click on the title of the assignment. Then scroll down and click on the Upload file button. Use the Browse button to locate the file you want to upload to the Student Files. Double click on the file to select it, and then click on the Upload button. You can upload as many files as you want.
• Submit Assignment: Once the assignment file(s) has been uploaded, you may click on the Submit assignment button. Note: All assignments in the Student files table will automatically be submitted. The Assignment Submission Confirmed screen appears. As part of the submission confirmation you will see a success message, date assignment was submitted, list of files submitted and whether or not you can retrieve your assignment for resubmission.
• Check Status: When the assignment has been graded, this message changes to a hyperlink that says Graded and your grade appears in the Grade column. Click the hyperlink to view your instructor's comments about your work.
• NOTE (1) If your instructor has enabled WebCT's email notification feature, you can receive email notification that your assignment was submitted successfully. Type your email address into the text box. (2). If the due date of the assignment has not passed or if the assignment has not yet been graded, your instructor may allow you to re-submit it.
| | | Quizzes | | From the Quiz page, you will be able to see when quizzes are due and discover the amount of time you will have to complete the quiz once you have begun it. To take a Quiz • Click on the title of the quiz. Next, click on the Begin Quiz button. • The window on the right side of the screen will show you the questions; you can click on a number to go directly to the question. • Remember to click on the Save Answer button after answering each question. It will prevent you from losing your answers. • When you are done, click Finish button. You will see a confirmation message. To submit quiz, click OK. If you click Cancel, you will get a chance to change your answers or answer missed ones.
| | | Grades | | Grades Tool allows you to see your grades in the course. You can see WebCT quiz results, assignment grades, and all components of your grade if your instructor adds them to the WebCT grade book. | | | Mail (Private) | | Mail allows you to send, receive, reply, and forward mail messages to others in the course. You can also store drafts of mail messages, search your mail messages, and add mail folders. • Click on Inbox link to see new messages that you have received. • By default, only unread messages are listed. To view all messages, click Show All. • By default, messages are presented by threads. Threaded messages are a series of replies to the same subject. • To expand or collapse a thread, click the blue arrow next to the Subject. • To view messages in chronological order, click Unthreaded. • To operate folders click Manage Folders link. • To operate messages click Manage Messages link. To write e-mail, click Compose Mail Message link. The Compose Mail Message screen appears in a new browser window. Hit the Browse button to select your receiver. To select more than one recipient, hold the CTRL key while selecting the names. Click Done. Type Subject and Message. You also can attach files. Click Send when you are finished. You can attach files to Mail or Discussion messages: • Locate Attachments box on the Compose Message screen. Click on Browse button. It will open a new window. • Choose the file you want to attach on you computer. Click Open. You will be returned to the Compose message screen. • Click on Attach File button. Window will reload and you will see your file attached to the message. | | | Discussions | | Discussions are divided into different topics that allow your instructor to create discussion groups around particular subjects. Topics can be public or private. Everyone in your course can access public topics, while private topics are available only to the set of students that the instructor chooses. • By default, the Discussion Messages screen lists unread messages. To view both read and unread messages, click Show All. • By default, messages are presented by threads. Threaded messages are a series of replies to the same subject. To expand or collapse a thread, click the blue triangle next to the Subject. • To view messages in chronological order, click Unthreaded. To read message: From the Discussions table, click the blue arrow near the topic containing the messages you want to read. To view all of the messages posted to Discussions, click All. The Discussion Messages screen appears. Click the message name you want to read. To reply: Click the message to which you want to reply. The message appears. Choose the format for your reply: • To reply to all members of the topic without including the original message, click Reply. • To reply only to the person who posted the message, click Reply Privately. • To include the original message in your reply to all topic members, click Quote. • The Compose Message screen appears. • Provide Subject and put your message in the Message textbox. (It is NEVER a good idea to type your message right in the textbox. You should create your message in Word, spell check it, copy and paste into the Message textbox.) • Click Post to post your message. • You can attach files to Discussion Messages as well. To compile and download messages: • From the Discussions table, click the topic containing the messages you want to compile and download. The Discussion Messages screen appears. • Select the messages to compile by clicking Show All or Show Unread, Unthreaded or Threaded (To expand a thread, click the blue triangle.) • Select the check box next to each of the messages you want to compile. To select all of the messages displayed, click Select all. • From the Apply to selected message(s) below drop-down list, select Compile. • Click Go. The Compiled Messages screen appears displaying your compiled messages. • To download your compiled messages, click Download. You may search messages by full name of the message author, user name of the message author, thread subject, unique message number, date that the message was sent, and content of the mail message: • From the Discussions table, click Search. The Search Topics screen appears in a new browser window. • Select your search parameters. • Click Search. The Discussion Messages screen appears listing all messages that satisfy your search requirements. • After you have searched your messages, you may compile and download them.
| | | Chat | | The Chat tool allows multiple users to communicate in real time.
