College Updates

40-Hour Work Week FAQ
Beginning September 12, 2009, the College will move exempt, non-exempt and Administrators to a 40 hour work week. In partial recognition of the increase in work hours, the Board of Governors has approved a 4 percent increase in affected employee group base salaries.

For more information regarding the change in work hours, go to the Frequently Asked Questions document, available online here.

Draft Standard Practice Guides for Review
Drafts of Standard Practice Guides, SPG-1502/BA: Cyclical Review and SPG 1502/BB: Individual Position Studies, have been posted to the College policies website for review and public comment.  They will remain on the web for comment until September 24, 2009.

White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans Invitation
Juan Sepulveda, Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, and Chancellor Roy Flores invite the College community to participate in a White House Initiative Community Conversation at Pima Community College on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

The event will take place in the Amethyst Room of PCC’s Downtown Campus, at 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

The data gathered from these sessions will be collected and will serve as the foundation for a new executive order, to be signed by President Barack Obama, which will govern the White House Initiative.

Please R.S.V.P. to only one session by Friday, Sept. 4 to 206-4747 or chancellor@pima.edu.

Academic Progress Notifications
The College will begin notifying students who are not in good academic standing of their status later this month.

Students that have not maintained a 2.0 grade point average and/or met other academic standards after completing at least 20 semester credit hours will be informed by formal e-mail that they are being placed on academic probation or restriction.

Students on academic probation are blocked from further registration until they complete an Academic Probation Workshop and will have their academic progress monitored until they are back in good standing. Students under academic restriction are blocked from further registration, must meet with a college counselor and are restricted to no more than 12 credits in the next semester (once approved for registration). They will have their academic progress monitored and must raise their GPA to 2.0 and complete at least 67 percent of their courses in the next semester in order to continue.

Conversations with the Chancellor
Conversations with the Chancellor will feature Pima Community College Board of Governors members Sherryn S. “Vikki” Marshall and Richard G. Fimbres.

Ms. Marshall will be featured on Wednesday, Sept. 9, and Thursday, Sept. 10.  Mr. Fimbres will be featured on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and Thursday, Sept. 17.

Conversations with the Chancellor is broadcast on Cox Cable channel 121 and Comcast Cable channel 97.  The show airs on Wednesday evenings at 8:00-8:30 p.m. and 9:30-10:00 p.m., and Thursday mornings at 8:00- 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m.

Inside Story: Head Football Coach Pat Nugent

What’s different about this year’s Aztecs football team? “Everything!” says Pat Nugent, Pima’s first full-time head football coach, “We have all new coaches, new offense and defense and new uniforms.”

A full-time Tucson resident for 20 years, Nugent, 43, made Canyon Del Oro High School a state power in his eight years there as head football coach.  He attended The University of Arizona from 1985 to ’90, during which he was student manager for the football team. Nugent graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in general studies.

He and his wife Michelle have four children, Rode, 18, Gabryella, 14, Ysabella, 6 and Jayden, 2.

“Tucson has been great for me and my family,” Nugent says. “I am originally from New York, and I don’t miss the cold winters there.”

The Aztecs host their first game Saturday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. against Eastern Arizona College, fielding a team with 66 Southern Arizona athletes. Tickets for the game, held at Tucson Magnet High School (400 N. 2nd Ave.), are $5.

Best Practices: Print Services

Many employees may be unaware that PCC has its own full-service print shop.

Print Services completes some 2,000 jobs every year – an estimated five million impressions. The range of jobs includes booklets, fliers, brochures, posters, textbooks, bookmarks and in-house forms.

Providing its own print services gives the College control over the timeline and security of the documents it prints. And when it comes to cost, the College Print Services can’t be beat. They can complete an 8.5 x 11 full-color copy for 14 cents – compared to up to $1 from a retail vendor.

Employees who would like to use Print Services for their printing needs must go through their business offices for proper funding authority.
