The event will honor Henry “Hank” Oyama and will benefit the Pima Community College Foundation. Chancellor Roy Flores is the Honorary Chair of the event.

College Plan: Status Report at Aug. 12 Board of Governors’ Meeting

Planning and Institutional Research is preparing a status report on the 2008-2011 College Plan to be presented at the next Board of Governors’ meeting on Aug. 12. The report will cover 13 strategies and the activities completed in support of them. By the end of the calendar year, Pima will have completed or made progress on 19 of 38 strategies for improvement. PCC has used comprehensive college-wide plans to shape and guide its decision-making since 2004. The 2008-2011 plan is proceeding on schedule.

Inside Story: New Online Job Application and Tracking System

Pima has a new online application tracking system that streamlines the hiring process for applicants and Pima staff involved in the hiring process.

The College will use the secure online system to manage the recruitment process and communicate with applicants. The system is integrated into the existing Pima Jobs web site, linked from the PCC homepage, so that job seekers can quickly find job openings, contact information and more.

Currently, the online system is used for temporary and regular staff and administrative positions.

With the new system, those involved in the hiring process can review application materials online at their convenience, without the need to meet with others involved in the process.

“Acquiring this new tool is an important step in streamlining College processes and increasing communication to all parties,” says Teresita Flores, Executive Director, Employment/Legal Affairs.

With the new system, applicants can:

  • Complete an online job application
  • Upload supporting documents, such as a letter of interest and transcripts
  • Edit their applications
  • Check on the status of their applications
  • Select interest cards to receive an e-mail when a job you are interested in is available

Human Resources staff is available to help applicants and applicant screening committee members. Call 206-4623.

Best Practices: New Student Orientation

When it came time to re-vamp PCC’s New Student Orientation program, Pima looked to its students for guidance. PCC launched an updated version of New Student Orientation in April after spending three months redesigning the program based on current student feedback, according to Leticia Menchaca, one of PCC’s VPs of Student Development.

Students told Pima officials they wanted a shorter orientation that was more hands-on, more interactive and more focused on MyPima. They wanted to learn how to navigate MyPima, including how to look for classes, register and pay online. The old orientation program lasted three hours and provided so much information it was overwhelming, Menchaca said.  The new program lasts only one hour, yet is still comprehensive. It also empowers students by giving them the tools to achieve self-efficacy.

Although orientation is no longer mandatory, the orientation sessions are full, Menchaca said. Students really seem to appreciate that the orientations are available everyday on every campus during peak season and that sessions are scheduled during day, evening and weekend hours. Later this fall, the orientation also will be available online.
