College Updates

New College Voicemail System, Changeover May 15th, 2009
All College employees who have telephones with voicemail will need to create a new voicemail box in the new AVST voicemail system by 5 p.m. on May 15, 2009. Instructions on setting up your new voicemail box and on using the new system are available online.

The old voicemail system will be removed from service at 5:00 p.m. on May 15, 2009. Employees will not be able to communicate with it after this date.  Messages saved in the current voicemail system will not be moved to the new system.  Employees are encouraged to clean out their existing voicemail box so they will not lose important information.

Please refer all questions to 206-2718 or telephone@pima.edu.

Board of Governors Meeting Update
In keeping with the College’s annual practice regarding budget adoption, the Board approved a comprehensive preliminary overview of the Fiscal Year 2009-10 Proposed Budget and the Capital Budget Plan for Fiscal Years 2010 and 2011. The approvals are in preparation for final acceptance of the budgets in June.

Corrected: Summer Work Schedule
The Board of Governors approved a flexible work schedule for non-exempt and exempt staff and administrative employees. The four-day workweek schedule will begin the week of June 1, 2009 and end August 14, 2009. To provide equitable holiday pay to all eligible employees, there will be no flexible work schedule the week of June 29 because of the July 4 holiday.

Summer operations for core academic and business services will continue to be Monday through Friday. An extended four-day workweek schedule will begin and end at the appropriate hours designated by the administration to meet operating business needs. Employees working a flexible four-day work schedule will continue to work the same number of hours per week, with a 45-minute lunch break each day.

Blackboard Vista - Scheduled Maintenance and Outage
The Blackboard Vista system will be unavailable May 22, 2009 from 5:00 am to 8:00 am due to required system maintenance.  This outage occurs after the spring session ends and before the summer session begins. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

18th Annual PCC Scholarship Golf Tournament
This year’s tournament will be June 6 at the Randolph Golf Course. The benefit raises funds for student scholarships.  The tournament includes a four-player scramble, awards luncheon, raffle, range balls, golf shirt and hole-in-one contest.  Registration fees are $75 per player.  To register, call 520-206-4809 or visit www.golfinvite.com/pccgolf09.

PCC Auction, June 1-3
Pima Community College will be holding a Sealed Bid Public Auction of surplus equipment and supplies at the M&S Warehouse, 6680 S. Country Club Rd., on June 1-3, 2009. The Auction time is from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday.

Best Practices: Women’s Tennis Team
Pima’s Gretchen Schantz recently was named Women’s Tennis coach of the year in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.

The team finished 18th in the 2009 NJCAA National Tournament. Fourth-year coach Schantz had a strong recruiting class thanks to her work at Tucson Racquet Club, where she met Cindy Sands (Tucson, Salpointe Catholic HS), a 2008 high school state quarterfinalist. That’s also where she recruited Teri Flanagan, Lori Cinnamond and Kelly Ponzio.

Shantz calls them “The Legends” because they all “came to tennis later in life.” “Some of them were already going to Pima but hadn’t competed in college before,” Schantz said. Sands, Flanagan, Cinnamond and Ponzio all return next year.

Inside Story: New Voicemail System
You won’t have voicemail next week unless you create a voice mailbox in the new AVST voicemail system. All College employees who have telephones with voicemail need to create a new voicemail box in the system by 5 p.m. on May 15, 2009.

Scott Ferguson, director of IT Network Services,  reports that “not very many” have done so yet. “Out of 2,600 phones, I’d say 110,” have been switched to the new system, he states. “Everybody really needs to do it and it only takes a few minutes.”

Instructions on setting up your new voicemail box <link> and on using the new system are available online.

PCC is changing to the new voicemail because the old one “is no longer supported,” Ferguson says. Parts and maintenance contracts for the system are no longer available.

The old voicemail system will be taken out of service shortly after the May 15 changeover. Employees will not be able to communicate with it and many unanswered calls could end up routed to the Information Center phone line, Ferguson says.

Messages saved in the current voicemail system will not be moved to the new system.  Employees should clean out their existing voicemail box so they will not lose important information.

“It goes away forever,” Ferguson says.

Please refer all questions to 206-2718 or telephone@pima.edu.
