| POSITION: | SCIENCE LABORATORY SUPERVISOR - (Multi-Discipline) | | HOURLY RATE | $18.90 | GRADE: | B24 | | | This is a non-exempt position as defined under the Fair Labor Standards Act. | | HOURS: | 37.5 per week, 12 months per year | | JOB NUMBER: | 08026BDS3 | | Closing Date: | OPEN UNTIL FILLED – First review August 13, 2008 | | CONTACT: | Brenda Demic, Email: Brenda.Demic@pima.edu | DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Working collaboration with Department Chair and faculty: Supervises a multi-disciplined science (biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy focus) laboratory team and manages all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the laboratories to includesupervising and training staff, conducting performance evaluations, termination, and disciplinary recommendations, participating in hiring, and prioritizing and assigning work; Participates in the planning, preparation, delivery, and removal of lab experiments; provides technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students; Provides responsive support for daily classroom operations; Develops OSHA and laboratory training; Maintains facility equipment; Serves as the campus Lab Safety Officer and implements all aspects of safety to ensure compliance with college, local, state, and federal laws; Plans, designs, coordinates, and recommends facility changes and equipment needs; communicates with outside vendors and makes recommendations for purchases; Plans and drafts the laboratory operating budget; Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated experience and/or ability to: - Supervise various levels of staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work, participating in hiring; termination, and disciplinary recommendations, conducting performance evaluations and training staff;
- Determine science laboratory facility equipment needs/changes;
- Evaluate science laboratory operations and activities for effectiveness;
- Develop OSHA and laboratory training;
- Research related new products and technology;
- Perform equipment repair and maintenance;
- Recognize and solve problems;
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships in a diverse environment.
Demonstrated skills in and knowledge of: - Biology, chemistry, astronomy, and/or microbiology
- Management and operation of a multi-discipline area laboratory;
- Leadership and personnel management principles; training principles;
- Preparation of various statistics and reports related to assigned areas of responsibility;
- Customer service principles;
- Computers and related software applications;
- Budget administration principles; record keeping techniques;
- Applicable computer programs and equipment;
- Lab Safety.
Experience, Education and Licensing: - Bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, and/or chemistry,
- Two years Laboratory Specialist level experience in one of the above areas, and
- One year supervisory experience or,
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Must be able to obtain HAZMAT and OSHA certifications and any other certifications necessary to meet state requirements.
