Who are the facilitator/trainers of Professional Development?

Professional Development facilitators for Pima Community College employee development are accomplished managers, technology leaders, professional educators, College administrators, and staff leaders within disciplines throughout the College. Although facilitators are typically subject area experts, employees interested in facilitation may have an aptitude for the topic and breadth of knowledge without depth of experience. Back-up trainers and co-facilitators are also needed. 

TOPICS NEEDING FACILITATORS/TRAINERS/Co-Facilitator/Backup TRAINERS:

Customer service, health and safety practices, teaching and learning, leadership development, communication and team work, and use of computers and software. 

Technology trainers conduct training sessions in a variety of topic areas to include, but not limited to Introduction to Banner, Student Services Module, any other Banner modules as needed; media point software orientations; email/calendaring. May develop technology job aids for presentations and training seminars; and oversee technology assessment of core competencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Facilitators for Professional Development workshops must be able to: 1) create a learning environment conducive to adult learning 2) facilitate the process of critical thinking and critical reflection 3) access learner experience as instructional resources 4) monitor learner satisfaction throughout the activity 5) provide multiple learning options 6) relate instruction to learners’ experience 7) adjust for physiological and psychological differences. The role of instructor includes being coach, referee, mentor, facilitator, co-learner and colleague.

Instruct to predetermined learning objectives usually with developed materials for participants; may contribute to content development and preparation of materials. Oversee classroom management. Monitor participation and confirm workshop completion.  Distribute certificate. Commit to instructing contact hours as designed. Set up and break down presentation materials/equipment. Return excess materials, sign-in roster, certificates not distributed, and participant evaluations to OPD.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of: Good interpersonal relations; principles and practices of quality customer service; teaching and assessment strategies; principles of effective student learning; principles, practices, and techniques of employee development and training; use of computers and pertinent computer software, including presentation software. Facilitators and trainers must have a working knowledge of topic theory and/or application.

Skills:

Time Management-Managing one’s own time and the time of others. The ability to shift back and forth between two or more activities or sources of information

Writing-Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.

Speaking-Talking to others to convey information effectively-The ability to speak clearly so others can understand.  

Auditory Attention-The ability to focus on a single source of sound in the presence of other distracting sounds.

Coordination-Adjusting actions in relation to others

Instructing-Teaching others how to do something

Active Listening-Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words.

Active Learning-Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem solving and decision making.

Monitoring-Assessing performance of yourself and the learners to make improvements or take corrective action

Judgment/Decision-making-Considering potential actions to choose the most appropriate

Problem Sensitivity-The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. Recognizing a problem.

Social Perceptiveness-Being aware of others’ reaction and understanding why they react as they do

Critical Thinking-Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems

Service Orientation-Actively looking for ways to help

Persuasion-Persuading others to change their minds or behaviors

Negotiation-Bringing opposing thoughts, ideas together and trying to reconcile differences

Equipment Selection-Determining the kind of presentation equipment, room set needed to do the job

Learning Strategies-Select and use training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things

Speed of Closure-The ability to quickly make sense of, combine, and organize information into meaningful patterns. 

Inductive Reasoning-The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions

Deductive Reasoning-The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense

Ability to: Provide effective instruction and practical professional application of workshop content. Use communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, and College employees, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including all groups within a diverse, multicultural community. Create settings where dialogue can occur providing the learner with the opportunity to examine the perspectives of others. Use positive nonverbal communication.  Address learners as equals, share authority and employ informal room arrangements.  Integrate knowledge and basic principles of adult learning theory and methods into training sessions. 

Education/Experience

Technology Trainers: Two or more years working experience with Banner, information management system; subject expert on Introduction to Banner and two or more Banner topics including: admissions and registration, data standards, encumbrances, express services, grants management, introduction to finance and reporting, introduction to human resources, personnel action forms, journal vouchers and budget adjustments, payroll and effort reporting, PimaReports, requisitions, student account information and student services information. Prefer a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in education, business, information technology or related field or equivalent experience in business, information technology or higher education. Experience in or a willingness to use an adult learning module of teaching and learning. 

Facilitator/Trainers – Non technology: Five or more year’s topic experience. Prefer a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in education, business, information technology or related field or equivalent experience in business, information technology or higher education. Experience in or a willingness to use an adult learning module of teaching and learning

SELECTION PROCESS: Required application materials will be screened on the basis of criteria listed in this announcement.  The selection process may include interview, a skills test, and/or other job-related assessment. A teaching demonstration will be required as part of the selection process.

  1. Which methods, strategies, and techniques do you believe are effective in training a diverse group (academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds) of adult employee learners?
  2. Assume you will be selected to demonstrate your teaching ability.  Select a topic, write a description and 3 -5 learning objectives. Construct an activity to assess learner achievement of one learning objective.
  3. Describe your knowledge and experience in the area(s) you are interested in teaching:  customer service, building trades, public safety, transportation and security, law/public administration, education/training, human resources, administration and management, clerical/office, accounting/finance/procurement, marketing, technology, health and wellness.

OTHER INFORMATION:  This position conducts training at various locations throughout Pima College. Reliable transportation is required.
