Moustafa to be Recommended as Men's Tennis Coach
August 31, 2009 Tucson, AZ - Dr. Roy Flores, Chancellor of Pima Community College, plans to recommend Sharif S. Moustafa as the new men’s tennis coach, pending Board of Governors’ approval Sept. 9. If appointed, Sharif S. Moustafa will replace hall of fame inductee Mike Curry. “We are excited by the possibility of having Sharif on board with PCC Athletics,” says Edgar Soto, Pima’s Executive Director of Athletics. “The tennis program has a long tradition of success in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and we look forward to Coach Moustafa continuing the success.” Moustafa will continue working as a pro at Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club, where he has been since 2007. He also was a pro for six years at Ron Smith Tennis Academy in Tucson, as well as director and head pro at Club Yuma (Ariz.) Fitness Center. Moustafa expects the team will qualify for nationals. “It is important for the players to know that I am a hard coach,” Moustafa says. “But it is only because I hope to see them achieve their own goals, whether it is in academics or competing at a higher collegiate level.” Curry had been Pima’s only men’s tennis coach, serving in that capacity for 36 years. Pima was 305-233 during his tenure, and the team qualified for the national tournament 15 times. In 2008, Curry was inducted into the NJCAA Men’s Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame. “I know Coach Curry was at Pima for a very long time and has not only done a lot for tennis but for the community as well,” Moustafa says. “I hope that I can be as good of an example to the community as he was.” The men’s tennis coach position is part-time and seasonal (January through May). Moustafa will be recruiting and doing coaching duties at other times as needed. The team competes in the NJCAA Division I. The men’s tennis coach position will be on the Sept. 9 Board of Governors agenda. CONTACT: A. Rachelle Howell, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Marketing (520) 206-4850
