Board of Governors Hold June Meeting
June 11, 2009 Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College’s Board of Governors addressed several issues at Wednesday night’s Board of Governors meeting. 1. At a special meeting required by state statute, the Board adopted the proposed budget for the Pima County Community College District for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. In keeping with the College’s annual practice regarding budget adoption, the Board had reviewed the proposed budget during its regular meeting of May 13, 2009. Prior to Wednesday night’s special meeting, the Board held a statutorily-required public hearing on the FY 2010 budget. 2. Also at the special meeting, the Board approved a 6.2 percent decrease in the Pima County Community College District’s combined primary and estimated secondary property tax rates. Property taxes provide funds to meet a variety of needs that allow Pima Community College to better serve the community. Such needs include budget to meet inflationary costs in employee benefits, utilities, and other contractual agreements, as well as funds to improve the services provided to students and the Pima County community. 3. Following the public hearing and special meeting, the Board held its regular meeting. At this meeting, the Board accepted a grant of $136,715 from the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education for the Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership and Special Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership programs. The money will fund financial aid grants for needy Arizona resident students. The grant is for the 2009-10 award year. 4. Also at its regular meeting, the Board approved an intergovernmental agreement with Pima County to continue Workforce Development and educational programs from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. The maximum value of the agreement is $959,605. The IGA includes provisions for retraining displaced workers and for improving literacy and basic education skills. 5. Also at its regular meeting, the Board approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Cochise County Community College District. The IGA establishes a program to prepare students for professional flight crew positions in general aviation or commercial airline programs. Under the agreement, the Cochise County Community College District will be responsible for flight instruction, which will be conducted at Tucson International Airport. PCC will conduct all classroom academics in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations, or will authorize Cochise College to provide ground school training necessary for student progress in the program. All PCC instructors must meet FAA and Cochise College requirements. No additional funding is associated with the agreement. In keeping with tradition, the Board will not meet in July. The next scheduled meeting of the Board will be Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. in the PCC District Office Community/Board Room at 4905 E. Broadway. CONTACT: A.
