Board of Governors Holds May Meeting

May 14, 2009

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College’s Board of Governors addressed several issues at Wednesday night’s Board of Governors’ meeting.

1. The Board recognized the achievements of the College’s women’s basketball team. The Aztecs finished third in the 2009 National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Championships in March. Pima’s final record was 28-6. Freshman center Tia Morrison made the NJCAA Division II All-American first team, and freshman guard Abyee Maracigan made the Division II All-American third team. Morrison and Maracigan also earned first-team Arizona Community College Athletic Conference honors, and Todd Holthaus was named ACCAC women’s basketball coach of the year. Nine players from this season’s team will return next year. The Aztecs also excelled in the classroom. The team had a grade-point average of 2.96 through the Fall semester, and five players made the athletic director’s Honor Roll.

2. The Board heard presentations from Mary Ann Hendrickson, program coordinator for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, and Anita Mendoza, a longtime local educator and assistant superintendent of instruction for AmeriSchools Inc. Ms. Hendrickson and Ms. Mendoza discussed ways in which their organizations can work with the College to improve education for their students. Both speakers thanked the College for partnering with their schools in a variety of ways, and hoped to continue the collaborations, especially to ensure that their high schools’ graduates are academically prepared for post-secondary education.

3. The Board approved changes in student fees for the 2009-10 academic year. The changes reflect the addition of new courses that have associated services or consumable-supplies costs consistent with currently existing fees. Fees in existing courses remain unchanged.

4. The Board authorized a contract with Follett Higher Education Group to manage the College’s five bookstores from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2014. The new contract will significantly increase the total contribution to the College and includes cost-control measures that will benefit Pima students.

5. In keeping with the College’s annual practice regarding budget adoption, the Board approved a comprehensive preliminary overview of the Fiscal Year 2009-10 Proposed Budget and the Capital Budget Plan for Fiscal Years 2010 and 2011. The approvals are in preparation for final acceptance of the budgets in June.
