Jazz Combos perform April 21
April 10, 2008 Pima Community College’s Jazz Improv Combos will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21. The concert will feature three combos, each under the direction of adjunct Jazz faculty Mike Kuhn.
The concert will be held in the West Campus Center for the Arts. The program includes works by Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Paul Desmond, Fats Waller, Miles Davis, Thad Jones and Cannonball Adderley. The College’s Upside Down Dance Troupe will perform with the combos on one of the numbers. The PCC Jazz Combos are formed out of music improvisation classes. Each combo contains a rhythm section, several horns and a vocalist. Each group performs their own set of repertoire featuring jazz standards and selections from the Great American Songbook. Besides this performance, several combos perform at a variety of additional venues. Each combo also has the opportunity to cut a demonstration CD recording of several music compositions at a professional recording studio. In addition to instructing jazz ensemble and improvisation classes at PCC, Mike Kuhn plays saxophone with the Arizona Jazz Orchestra and performs regularly in the greater Tucson area. Tickets are $6 and available through the Center for the Arts box office. For more information, call 206-6986 or e-mail centerforthearts@pima.edu.
