UA Professor Discusses Hubble Space Telescope

April 11, 2008

Pima Community College will host a free Lecture Under the Stars on Wednesday, April 23.  “Hubble’s Greatest Hits” will discuss lessons from astronomy’s most unique telescope.

“Hubble’s Greatest Hits” will be presented by Dr. Christopher Impey, University Distinguished Professor and Deputy Head of the Astronomy Department at the University of Arizona.

Astronomy’s most ambitious optical mission into space has made contributions in every field from planets to cosmology.  Dr. Impey will discuss why the Hubble Space Telescope is so special, and why it may get even better.

Dr. Impey was one of six faculty nationwide selected as a Distinguished Teaching Scholar by the National Science Foundation.  He has also been chosen as Arizona’s “Professor of the Year” by the Carnegie Foundation for the Improvement of Teaching.

Dr. Impey is a former vice president of the American Astronomical Society and the author of 160 research papers and two astronomy textbooks.   He has earned ten University of Arizona teaching awards.

The Lecture Under the Stars will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the College’s East Campus, 8181 E. Irvington Road.  Skies permitting, telescopes will be set up for participants to observe the heavens that evening.
