Faculty Concert Features Tuba

Pima Community College faculty Dr. Mark Nelson on tuba, with Marie Sierra on piano, will be joined by guest artists Kelly Thomas on euphonium, Michael Sherline on tuba, Raymond T. Ryder on piano, and Marya Giesey on violin, for a tuba recital on April 17 at the College's Center for the Arts.

Highlights of the recital include the World Premiere of “Running the Gamut” for tuba and piano by PCC faculty member Jay Vosk; “Six Studies in English Folk Song” by Ralph Vaughan Williams; and “Diverse Elements” for euphonium, tuba and piano by David Gillingham with Kelly Thomas, University of Arizona’s tuba and euphonium instructor. The program also includes a tuba duo with Michael Sherline, Tuscon Symphony Orchestra principal tubist, featuring a trio sonata by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arranged for two tubas; and a special performance of the “Trio, opus 40” for violin, Eb horn and piano by Johannes Brahms. 

Nelson holds the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Arizona State University, and the Master of Education degree in Education Administration from the University of Vermont. He is currently chair of performing arts and director of bands at Pima Community College.

Tickets for the concert are $5-6.
