College Receives Grant to Promote Tolerance
August 1, 2007Pima Community College has received a $10,000 grant from the Every Voice in Action Foundation to help fund its Cooperative Outreach and Responsible Education (CORE) Project. The project challenges discrimination and promotes tolerance in the community using young people as catalysts. The CORE Project will select 20 students to create community-wide anti-discrimination and tolerance programs. All students who are taking at least one credit at the Campus are eligible and must complete an application to participate in the project. A diverse group of participants will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of students, staff, and faculty members. Matt Matera, Student Life Coordinator at Desert Vista Campus and the director of CORE, said the project is an opportunity for students to share their stories, learn from each other and raise awareness about various forms of discrimination. “The CORE Project will provide a place for students to think more critically about our society, learn from each other’s stories, and create action plans to combat personal forms of prejudice and discrimination in their communities,” Matera said. The Every Voice in Action Foundation, formerly the M.A.R.K. Foundation, is a private foundation that makes grants in the areas of youth activism, youth media and youth as community resources.
