May 16, 2007The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) has recognized the Pima Community College Motorcycle Rider Program with the Annual Community Safety Leadership Award. The award will be presented at the ASSE’s Annual Awards Banquet, from 6:30 p.m. - 9 p.m., Friday, May 18 at the Savoy Opera House in Trail Dust Town, 6541 E. Tanque Verde Road. Awards for Safety Professional of the Year and Community Safety Award winners will also be presented. PCC’s Sheila Robinson, the Motorcycle Rider Program’s coordinator, will be the keynote speaker. Robinson is the chair of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Arizona Motorcycle Advisory Council. Since 1977, the PCC Motorcycle Rider Education program has been providing formalized training to both new and experienced motorcycle riders in Tucson and Pima County. The program was developed in response to a growing number of motorcycle-related accidents and fatalities. According to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, 150 motorcyclists were killed in Arizona during 2005, marking a 26 percent increase from 2004. Riders in the PCC program are trained by instructor-coaches in critical safety skills such as turning, braking and emergency maneuvers based on curriculum developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
